Lipiflow Treatment Near Newton, NJ
LipiFlow® is an in-office treatment for dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) that uses heat and massage to clear clogged oil glands in the eyelids. The non-invasive procedure takes about 12 minutes per eye and works by applying gentle, targeted heat and pressure to unblock and stimulate the glands, allowing for the proper production of oils that stabilize tears. While many patients experience immediate relief, some may see improvement over a few days to weeks.
LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation Treatment for MGD
More than 20 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease—a condition that occurs when the eyes are unable to produce enough quality tears for proper lubrication. Research shows that up to 86% of dry eye cases are connected to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). MGD occurs when the oil-producing meibomian glands in the eyelids become blocked, preventing enough protective oil from entering the tear film. Without this oil layer, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and discomfort.
At The Optical Center, we offer advanced relief through the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System, a proven, in-office treatment designed to restore natural gland function.
What Is the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System?
LipiFlow® is an FDA-cleared device that applies gentle, controlled heat to the inner eyelids while delivering precise, pulsating pressure to the outer eyelids. This combination safely melts and clears blockages within the meibomian glands.
The device’s curved, contoured design protects the cornea throughout the treatment. As the glands are warmed and massaged, the thickened oils (meibum) are liquefied and expressed—helping restore normal oil flow and improving the stability of your tear film.
Who Is Most at Risk for MGD?
While anyone can develop Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, certain factors increase the likelihood:
- Contact lens wearers – Reduced blink rate can cause glands to clog.
- Heavy digital device users – Extended screen time also decreases blinking, leading to stagnation in the glands.
- Postmenopausal women – Hormonal changes may affect oil production.
- People with autoimmune conditions, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus – Some medications may contribute to gland dysfunction.
Because LipiFlow® directly targets the root cause of MGD, it is an excellent option for those at higher risk or already experiencing symptoms like dryness, burning, irritation, fluctuating vision, or excessive tearing.
How It Works
LipiFlow uses a special device with a single-use applicator placed on the outside of each eyelid. It is a comfortable and painless procedure for most patients.
The device warms the inner eyelid and applies regulated pressure to massage the meibomian glands, melting blockages and flushing out obstructions.
This process helps restore the normal secretion of oil, which is crucial for a healthy tear film, and can lead to long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.
